Ubiquiti does not publish a number that says “this handles forty guests.” Nobody does. A UniFi network is really two decisions — the console that runs it, and the access point that broadcasts it — and unlike some of the brands on this site, the console is not optional for us. Here is what actually decides each one.
Every UniFi access point is managed by a console running the UniFi Network application — a Cloud Gateway, a Dream Machine or Dream Router, or software running on a small server. On most equipment in our supported list, the access point itself asks us whether to let a guest on. UniFi works the other way round: the guest signs in on our page, and we tell the console to let that phone onto the network, and to take it off again at checkout. Without a console running and reachable by us, that call has nowhere to land — a “standalone” access point set up only in the mobile app, with no console anywhere on the network, cannot be driven by our system at all.
So this is not a router-or-not question the way it is for some other brands — a console is required, full stop. The good news is Ubiquiti mostly sells the console and the router as the same box, so you are not usually buying two separate things. These run the UniFi Network application that we actually talk to, and double as the site’s router.
All-in-one: router, console and a built-in Wi-Fi 7 access point, powered from a single plug. For a single small room, this can be the entire network — no separate access point to buy at all.
Router and console only, no built-in Wi-Fi, manages a good number of further UniFi devices. Pick this when you want a stronger separate access point than a Dream Router’s built-in radio, or you already have one.
The same idea with more headroom, for a site that is adding several access points as it grows rather than staying at one.
Bigger than a single room? The Dream Machine SE and Pro Max step up further — more managed devices, PoE budget to power access points directly off the console’s own ports. That is squarely site-survey territory rather than something to size from this page.
Current UniFi access points, restricted to the ones a café or restaurant would realistically buy — nothing built for a warehouse or a stadium. Skip this section entirely if a Dream Router’s built-in Wi-Fi covers the room.

Worth knowing: the “concurrent clients” figure Ubiquiti publishes for each model is a rated ceiling, not a real-world usable number — Ubiquiti itself doesn’t publish a practical figure, and actual capacity depends heavily on the mix of devices and radio conditions in the room. Treat the capacity column as relative between these three models, not as a guest count.
The one to leave off any shortlist: the U6-Lite. Ubiquiti has delisted it and it is showing as sold out on its own product page — treat any advice that still recommends it as out of date, and buy the U7 Lite instead.
For a single room, almost any console-and-access-point combination above will cope with the internet line most small venues actually have. What actually decides the outcome is whether the room is fully covered — a busy corner out of range does more damage to the guest experience than picking the Lite over the Pro Max ever will — and whether your console or switch can actually deliver the PoE the access point needs.
The other half of sizing is the internet line itself, which is the same arithmetic regardless of which console or access point you choose. We work through it properly, with a worked example, in how much Wi-Fi does a venue actually need — the same maths applies to a restaurant, just at a smaller scale than the hotel example there.
Because we make the call to let a guest on, we have to be able to reach the console — a console on ordinary domestic broadband, with nothing forwarded and no private link, cannot be told anything. The guest signs in perfectly and stays offline.

Ranges, not exact figures — nobody, Ubiquiti included, can tell you a precise number without knowing what your guests actually do. These follow the same method as our hotel guide: a per-guest speed cap, enforced by the equipment, and a contention ratio that assumes not everyone is pulling hard at once. A café or restaurant runs busier concurrently than a hotel room overnight, so the ratio here is tighter than the hotel example.

This is independent of which access point you pick. The line is what you’re provisioning here, not the box broadcasting it. Past 100 simultaneous guests, or once you’re past a single room, this is exactly the point to get a site survey done rather than extrapolate the table further.

Once you are past one room, AP count and placement come from the survey, not from this table — and a Cloud Gateway Max or Dream Machine is worth planning for so guests roam between access points without dropping.

If the room genuinely fills up, yes — independent testing has shown it holding throughput and latency better under load, not just on paper. For a quiet single room, the standard Pro or even the Lite is enough.
Usually, for one room — it is a genuine Wi-Fi 7 radio, not a cut-down one. If a corner is out of range, add a separate access point rather than a second all-in-one console; you only need one console per site.

Not for a single room — the guidance above is enough. Anything bigger, and walls, materials and where people actually sit decide the access point count and placement far more than which model you buy. Get that surveyed properly before ordering hardware.
