The honest answer, for a single café or restaurant, is narrower than for the other brands on this site: Cisco’s small-business wireless range has largely been discontinued, and its cloud-managed Meraki range is built — and priced — for multi-site chains, not one room. Here is what that actually means for buying.
Cisco Business Wireless (CBW) is the standalone small-business line, set up on the access point itself with no separate controller box or subscription. Meraki MR is Cisco’s cloud-dashboard-managed range, aimed at organisations running many sites from one screen — every Meraki access point needs an active per-device licence to work at all, which is a recurring cost that a single café rarely needs to take on.
For one room, CBW is almost always the sensible choice. Meraki earns its place if you already run several venues and want them managed centrally.
On the gateway side, CBW has no matching Cisco small-business router — wire it into whatever router is already on site; the CBW cannot hold the private link to us itself, so that router has to be able to. Meraki’s equivalent is the MX security appliance range, which carries the same recurring licensing as Meraki MR and is realistically only worth it alongside a Meraki access point deployment, not paired with CBW.
Unlike the other brands on this site, Cisco’s small-business range does not currently offer a genuine choice of tiers — here is why.
The current Cisco Business Wireless access point, and the only one still in Cisco’s active line-up. Runs standalone, one access point acting as primary for the rest if you add more later. The pick for almost every single-room café or restaurant.
Cloud-managed from Cisco’s Meraki dashboard, with real per-device licence fees that continue for as long as the access point is in use. Makes sense once you are running several venues centrally — a poor fit, on cost alone, for one café.
The one to leave off any shortlist: the CBW240AC. Cisco has set its end-of-sale for August 2026 and has confirmed there is no replacement model — a purchase now is a dead-end line, however it is marketed in the meantime. The CBW140AC and CBW145AC are already past their own end-of-sale dates.
With effectively one current standalone model, the CBW150AX, there is no tier decision to make for Cisco the way there is for other brands — the decision is really whether Cisco is the right ecosystem at all. For a single room, it is rated for a comfortably high number of clients and runs on ordinary PoE. For anything past one room, coverage and placement come from a proper survey rather than from stacking more CBW150AX units.
The other half of sizing is the internet line itself, which is the same arithmetic regardless of which access point you choose. On Cisco Business Wireless, checkout stops a guest signing in again; the session they already hold runs to its own time limit rather than ending immediately.

Ranges, not exact figures — nobody, Cisco included, can tell you a precise number without knowing what your guests actually do. These follow the same method as our hotel guide: a per-guest speed cap, enforced by the equipment, and a contention ratio that assumes not everyone is pulling hard at once. A café or restaurant runs busier concurrently than a hotel room overnight, so the ratio here is tighter than the hotel example.

This is independent of which access point you pick. The line is what you’re provisioning here, not the box broadcasting it. Past 100 simultaneous guests, or once you’re past a single room, this is exactly the point to get a site survey done rather than extrapolate the table further.

Cisco has ended sale of the CBW140AC, CBW145AC and CBW240AC without a like-for-like replacement for the higher tiers, leaving the CBW150AX as the current standalone option. That is a genuine gap in the range, not something this page is simplifying.
